Medium is Becoming Mediocre

I like..or I used to like the TV show Medium which is on Monday nights. This show is about a psychic named Allison DuBois who works for the District Attorney and solves crimes and helps people by seeing the future, talking with ghosts, and by striving to be a good person.

However, it appears that the writers of this show have run out of ideas. On tonight's show, the main character, Allison, has nightmares. This isn't unusual for this character, but in tonight's show, she has nightmare after nightmare. Why does this bug me? There is no way that a husband would be able to put up with his wife screaming out every night because of nightmares. Either separate bedrooms or a divorce would be in order.

It's time for these writers to find some new ideas.

Bluphies

Wendy, Missy, and I went to Bluphies in Madison, Wisconsin, a few nights ago. I had one of the best meals of my life there.

I had: Scallop "pops": jumbo sea scallops, dipped in tempura and fried, served on chile infused sweet potatoes with crisp asian slaw then garnished with wasabi aoili and red chili sauce.

The above mixture doesn't sound good at first glance but it was fantastic. The sweet potatoes were the perfect balance or compliment to the spicy asian cole slaw. And the scallops melted in my mouth. Service was also excellent.

I'm not a big fan of gourmet food, but it's well worth a trip to Bluphies to taste some of the best food on the planet. And I thought the prices at Bluphies were reasonable.

Monkey Love

I found 3 hours in my busy life so that I could go see "King Kong" last night. Generally, I enjoyed it.

Actor Jack Black was enjoyable as the film director Carl Denham. Naomi Watts is very talented and was fantastic as Ann Darrow (King Kong's love interest). I've enjoyed Adrien Brody's performances in the past but it seemed that this time around his performance wasn't bad but it wasn't memorable either.

Director Peter Jackson of "Lord of the Rings" fame did a great job with the special effects, fight scenes, crowd scenes, and photography. But he really needs someone who can tell him to his face that 3 hours is way too long. At least 30 minutes, minimum, could have been cut out of this movie with no problem at all. I think the 3 hour length is what's keeping people away. Yes, he made millions, if not billions, on the movie "Lord of the Rings" but he still needs a good editor.

"King Kong" works on so many levels: humans are the most cruel and destructive of all animals. Beasts (think men and apes) can be tamed with beauty, but there is a cost of course. And at the end of the day, the message is: leave wild animals in the wild. Don't bring them home.

Unless you have a 70 inch TV at home, "King Kong" is worth a trip to the movie theater to see it on the big screen. Because of the violence, I don't recommend this movie for children.

Boring Flowers

Just rented the movie "Broken Flowers." This movie had potential. I like Bill Murray who plays the main character, Don Johnston. The rest of the cast were pretty good. But this movie goes nowhere fast.

The main character, Don, discovers that he has a son out there somewhere. So, for the rest of the movie, Don seeks out his old girlfriends so he can figure out which ex-girlfriend gave birth to Don's son.

This movie uses an old plot where a playboy has treated women badly and now must face them again. Maybe this could've worked if the movie had taken a fresh look or done something different but there is nothing fresh about this movie.

Bill Murray has become one of my favorite actors. And I enjoyed his sad sack character in "Lost in Translation" but I'm getting pretty bored with the minimalist, show no emotion character.

And boring is the best way to describe this movie. Skip this movie and rent "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou."

Sorry

For my faithful readers, I apologize.
There's been no time to post anything recently. We had the holidays. I'm studying for my final coming up in 2 weeks. A close family member has been hospitalized.

Wendy has been out of town taking care of the family member. The house has been very quiet with just the dogs and me occupying it. I've been eating a lot of chili and holding down the fort. I like the Staggs brand of chili: it has a little more kick to it.

I've been wanting to go see the new "King Kong" movie but can't find 3 hours in one block to go and see it.

I've been watching reruns of the Sopranos. "Star Trek: the Next Generation" has started playing on the computer channel, G4. I've watched a few episodes but I probably won't watch many more.

I watched the movie "Crash" over the weekend. It's getting great reviews and winning awards. What did I think? It was ok. The screenwriter and the director were very skillful in the way that they fit all the different storylines together. The actors did a good job. But it didn't thrill me or make me want to go out and buy it. And although it's topic is important, racism, for me, it didn't offer any new insights or solutions.
